.Net Developer Survey - Results

I just closed the survey a few hours ago.  Below is a quick break-down of the results.  I plan on digging into the numbers a little bit further, but at first glance the following responses surprised me …

  • 71.5% of responses indicated they don’t see a problem with blogging while at work.

That seemed incredibly high to me.  I would have guessed the yes/no percentages would have been flipped.  I think every boss I have ever had would have fired me on the spot if they caught me blogging at work.

  • 45.31% of responses indicated they don’t use social bookmarking sites.

That seemed a little low.

  • Over 75% of the responses indicated they have been at their current job for 4 years or less.

I am not surprised by this, but I still think this is really high (or wish it would be lower).

  • Twice as many people use linkedin as twitter.  And just about as people use linkedin as facebook/myspace.

I wouldn’t have guessed linkedin was that popular.

  • Lot’s of DEV III’s and Architects out there (56%)

How many person fill the survery?
Blog is very common, so I don't think 71.5% is high. Maybe our boss also write blog during working hours.

One problem with : DEV I DEV II DEV III

was that I didn't know what it meant :( .(is it common knowledge ?) . So the results there might not be relevant.

Good to see the results.

one typo....

'What best describes your current job title?' appears twice, should be 'how long have you been in your current position?' :-)

You're kidding me! So the people that don't blog think it is ok to blog at work (maybe because they never do), but if they use something else, like facebook, they do consider it unethical?

I am amazed to see how many people are actually very content with their job. Maybe it's the IT glow :)

Hi Matt,

The numbers do seem a little "off" to what you perceived the community would be like. But do remember that this survey was self motivated. Which means that I would imagine the people that actually took the survey - myself included - fit a certain profile and do not represent a true result with regards to the number of actual users out there.

Does that make sense?

Yes it's strange that people think it's ok to blog at work but consider unethical to use facebook. Personally I don't see why not to blog/use facebook/whatevwe at work, but it's obvious that many would disagree.

I work with tons of developers who haven't even got a clue what Twitter of Facebook is.
In fact, it's the kind of developers who come out of school and stick with what they learned there forever. The kind that is destroying our business :p

I think developers who read blogs have a certain awareness most other developers don't have. We are only (sadly) a small subset of all (wannabee) developers out there.

Still... interesting results...
